EXAMPLES OF DESIGN PRINCIPLES FROM CAMPUS

 DOMINANCE - CONTRAST

This is an example of dominance-contrast
The MM building is the dominance building in the campus. Because of its height, it is contrasting with the other buildings. Also, it has figure-ground relationship because we cannot understan which one is figure and which one is ground.

HIERARCHY

These are an examples of hierarchy. The height of buildings is changing  bottom to the top. In the first picture, the low part of building is the largest part while the high part is the smallest. In the second picture, the curvilinier part is more remarkable due to its height and its diifferent shape.

RHYTHM

This is an example of rhyhtm. Niches, windows, air conditions and doors are repeating and creating a rhyhm. Also, air conditions are in different directions so they have variation in repetition.
Also, it is an example of repetiton and variation.

FIGURE-GROUND RELTIONSHIP

These pictures are an example of figure-ground relationship
In the first picture, on the ceiling, niches are interrupting another niches which are paralel to columns. Also, each niche finish in the middle of window.

In the second picture, niches under the windows and windows are completing themselves. Also, the empty areas which are between the windows are in the same size with the windows. Thus, there is a figure-ground relationship. We do not know which one is figure or ground.

REPETITION AND VARIATION

These pictures are examples of repetition and variation.
the MM building has repetition. Windows are repeating and lines between windows are repeating. Lines which are repeating left to right and top to bottom are not the same although their purpuse is the same. Thus, there is repetition and variation.

In this picture, there are 4 red columns to separate the 3. and 4. windows. Also, there are thin lines between windows to separate them. While their propotions are different, their purpose is the same, so there is a varition in seperators, and repetition in purpuse. Moreover, windows, lines and empty areas are repeating, so there is  repetition.
